How To: Filter Data for a Specific Area
This tutorial provides step-by-step instructions to filter map data for specific areas using polygon filters in Honeycomb Data Explorer. Watch the video or follow the step-by-step instructions below.
Prerequisites
- Access to Honeycomb Data Explorer
- A map with data points already created
- Additional components (optional, e.g., title card, big number aggregation)
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Add the Polygon Filter Component
- Click "Edit Map" to open the sidebar
- Click "Add Component"
- Select "Polygon Filter" as the component type
- Close the sidebar to begin using the filter
2. Draw an Area Filter
- Click "Draw Area" on the map
- Click on the map to place your first point
- Continue clicking to add additional points forming your polygon
- Complete the polygon by clicking on your first point
- The data will filter automatically
3. Work with Filtered Data
- Observe filtered points on the map
- Note updates to other components (e.g., aggregations)
- Edit the polygon shape as needed:
- Results update in real-time
- All components reflect filtered data
4. Manage Area Filters
- Export options:
- Download area as GeoJSON file
- Upload existing GeoJSON files
- Remove filter:
- Click "Remove Area Filter" to show all data
- Reset view to original state
Important Notes
- Area filters are not persisted between sessions
- Each user can create their own custom filters
- Filters affect all linked components on the map
- GeoJSON import/export enables integration with other systems
