Get Started #5: Saving and Sharing Honeycomb Maps
This is the final tutorial in the Getting Started series. In this tutorial we walk through how to save and share maps created using Honeycomb Data Explorer in Snowflake.
Overview
In previous tutorials, we covered:
- Installing the Honeycomb Data Explorer app in Snowflake.
- Working with demo maps.
- Pulling data from a Snowflake table into Honeycomb.
We ended the last video with a map displaying rental properties (Airbnbs) in London, including a point layer with property locations, an H3 layer showing property density, and a bar chart comparing entire homes to private rooms.
Steps to Save and Share a Map
1. Save the Current Map
- Open the Sidebar
- Click on the Save/Load Map tab.
- In the top 'Save Map' section, enter a name for the map (e.g., "London Rentals").
- Select Save as new.
- Click Save map.
- Copy Link: After saving, copy the provided link to share the map with others.
2. Loading a Saved Map
- Method 1 - Using the Link: Open the copied link to view the saved map.
- Method 2 - From the Save/Load Map Tab: In the 'Load Saved Map' section, select a previously saved map and click 'Load Map'
3. Saving Changes to an Existing Map
- Modify the Map: Make desired changes (e.g., change the color scheme).
- Click on the Save/Load Map tab.
- In the top 'Save Map' section, ensure the map name remains the same.
- Unselect Save as new.
- Click Save to update the existing map.
TIP
- Saving a map in Honeycomb only saves the metadata (data source definitions, map layers, components, and settings).
- Each time the map loads, it pulls fresh data directly from Snowflake tables, ensuring the map always displays the most recent data.
Thank you for following along with the Honeycomb Data Explorer tutorial series. Good luck creating and sharing your maps!
